Description

1. The Insulation (The “Warmth” Layer)
Most high-performance reflective mitts in this “1800” class utilize a synthetic microfiber fill:
Thinsulate™ (C100): This is the most likely insulation used. It is a dense, non-woven polyester fiber that traps air molecules effectively. The “C100” grade provides significant warmth without the “puffy” bulk of traditional down, allowing for better grip.
GSM (Grams per Square Meter): These typically range from 100g to 200g, suitable for temperatures down to approximately -15°C to -20°C.
## 2. The Lining (The “Next-to-Skin” Layer)
Brushed Tricot / Fleece: The immediate inner surface is usually a 100% polyester brushed tricot. This feels soft and “fuzzy,” which helps to instantly trap body heat and wicks sweat away from your palms so your hands don’t get clammy.
Finger Separators: Many modern mittens (often called “Lobster” or “Hybrid” styles) actually have individual finger slots hidden inside the mitten shell. This design increases the surface area of the lining against your skin, significantly boosting warmth and dexterity.
## 3. The Hidden Barrier (The “Dry” Layer)
TPU Membrane: Sandwiched between the reflective outer shell and the soft inner lining is a thin, plastic-like film (Thermoplastic Polyurethane). This layer is waterproof but breathable, allowing microscopic steam (sweat) to escape while preventing liquid water (snow/rain) from reaching your hand.
